What’s Quick Migration? Quick Migration is a feature of Veeam Backup Free, a completely free edition of Veeam Backup & Replication (with no expiration date!).
VEEAM QUICK MIGRATION LICENSE
There are a number of scenarios when VMware vMotion might be helpful, starting with pre-defined hardware maintenance when you need to move your VMs to another ESX(i) host for a short period of time without downtime, and to proactive migration of live VMs away from underperforming servers. If your vSphere licensing includes VMware vMotion, congratulations, you are one lucky virtualization admin! But what should you do if your vSphere license doesn’t offer this feature, OR if you need just need this feature for a one-time project? In this case, Quick Migration from Veeam might be your solution. VMware vMotion was introduced in 2003 and is now a part of almost all VMware vSphere editions, except for vSphere Essentials Kit, which is designed for small virtual environments. Rick’s IT experience includes system administration and IT management with virtualization being the central theme of his career recently.VMware vMotion is a vSphere feature that allows you to move a running VMware virtual machine from one host to another, with no significant impact on your production environment. Rick is a popular blogger, podcaster and active member of the virtualization community.
VEEAM QUICK MIGRATION SOFTWARE
Rick Vanover (vExpert, MCITP, VCP, Cisco Champion) is a product strategy specialist for Veeam Software based in Columbus, Ohio. Do you have free tools you like to use? Share your comments below. These are just some of the free tools Veeam adds to the virtualization community. These are free tools you can use to do things now with your applications and virtualized infrastructure. While those migration technologies are lossless, Veeam Quick Migration migrates only with the downtime needed to move the active memory on the host (in the case of a host migration) and the swap file on disk of a VM moving between storage systems, or both. This is especially useful if the environment isn’t licensed with vMotion or Storage vMotion. This gem is also included with Veeam Backup Free Edition, and allows a VMware vSphere environment (all editions except ESXi Free Edition) to move VMs from one host to another and optionally one storage to another. One additional free tool needs to me mentioned, Veeam Quick Migration.
It’s pretty clear that free tools can still solve real world needs today. Veeam Explorer Active Directory shows the domain at the time it was backed up The figure below shows Veeam Explorer for Active Directory:
If you’ve backed up the VM, this tool represents the domain at that point in time – including things like its group membership and placement in the domain. This could be especially beneficial if you need to investigate access, after the fact.
VEEAM QUICK MIGRATION PASSWORD
We’ve added this recently and it can allow you do all kinds of great things, like restore an entire user (with password hash!), an entire organizational unit or even see the current count of bad password attempts for a privileged user. The free edition doesn’t insert directly into mailboxes however.Īnother free tool to give immediate benefits for virtualized environments is Veeam Explorer for Active Directory, which is currently in beta. PST’s, forward items, open and search mailboxes. The beauty here is that even the free edition can solve some real problems! The functionality included in Veeam Backup Free Edition for Exchange includes the ability to build. Veeam Explorer for Exchange can allow mailboxes to be exported or put into an Exchange Server. The person didn’t have any notable Exchange experience, and when I showed Veeam Explorer for Exchange, the idea caught on! Veeam Explorer for Exchange is shown below:
The challenge was that while the Exchange server was virtualized, they didn’t have a way mix the Exchange organizations or have an Active Directory trust between them as the part of the business was sold off. I was speaking with someone recently and they had a situation where they needed to move mailboxes from one Exchange organization to another, as part of a divesture of part of their company. Now I may have your attention, almost everyone uses these critical applications! I’d like to highlight a few tools that can maybe help you out from Veeam, especially if you use Microsoft Exchange or Active Directory. Further, there are situations where we need tools for special situations.
